This is đź’© for the same reason those "Make America Feminist for Once" or "Canada is not for sale" (in the same font) hats are đź’©. You think you're doing something subversive, but it's a rhetorical tool that plays into the hand of the oppressor because you are ultimately still advertising them.

Remember to keep your eyes on the prize: the future world you want to build Don’t drown thinking only of the things you are against Remember to dream of and work to create what you’re for

Great point. Another way to think about this is that all data are derived from models. And those models have a mix of explicit and implicit assumptions that have a variety of errors of different types and magnitudes. 🧪

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

🌊 Dear NSF and NOAA colleagues, Your work matters. Many of you have sacrificed personal gain and scientific freedoms to serve the public good. Thank you! Your mission protects lives and protects nature, including the most vulnerable people and places suffering the fall out of anthropogenic change.

USPS is the second most popular federal agency after the National Parks Service and just ahead of NASA. www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/...

First time doing fried rice with wild rice*. Lots of garlic, onion, carrot, edamame, and chili crisp. *it’s not actually rice #Food #Cooking #PostingThroughIt

STORY + DATA: The scale of Canadian efforts to boycott US goods is becoming clear. New border data shows crossborder traffic has utterly plummeted in the last month. Southbound traffic during the recent holiday weekend dropped by more than 40% from last year. fvcurrent.com/p/border-tra...

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

“President Plane Accident,” this source says. “Is that how Donald Trump wants to be remembered?"

Imagine being rich enough to do anything you want and choosing to take food and medicine from starving children to give yourself even more money.

The Democrats on the House Science Committee have set up a website to collect stories from fired federal employees, anonymously if desired democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

Professors please pull up a chair. I’ve been talking to my classes about what has been going on. I explained indirect costs to them. I talked to them about what a probationary employee is in the government. At the end of class they asked if we could talk about it more. (1/)

i also want to believe that our scholarship matters but wonky fights over the discount rate just feel like they belong to another time... a time when they couldnt just delete entire agencies out of nowhere

Who is writing about what "probationary" means in the context of federal govt workers? These are mid-career professionals, often leaders in their fields, who have simply taken another position. They're not in their first jobs, trainees, or skating on thin ice related to job performance.

At the eclipse of the Anglosphere universities' wealth and dominance, we can at least think now about what they achieved - and also how conservative, how narrow they always remained. Many histories to write.

So much for raking the forests.

This cartoon by @mluckovich.bsky.social is getting banned on Twitter. Because of course it is.

Congrats to Anna Wassel on this new paper exploring how a locally dominant and regionally iconic temperate forest tree (pawpaw) alters understory plant biodiversity and community assembly 🌱 Led by the Pawpaw Patrol Team in the #TysonResearchCenter #ForestGEO Plot 🌳 (1/2) doi.org/10.1002/ecs2...

soon enough, the mere presence of black and latino students on campus will be illegal racial discrimination against white students www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

These baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) that I planted 25 years ago in a low spot along the driveway are unfazed by last night’s 1” of heavy rain followed by 3” of heavy snow 🌱

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

Malicious ignorance is so apt for what is happening now, whether it’s how Canada, Europe, or government workers are described and treated. This piece nailed it 6 years ago and it’s so much worse this time.

Other than the major ridge-tops that have logging-access roads, most of the state forest land where I hike doesn’t have trails. So, when I’m not on the ridges, I follow deer trails because deer know the best routes (to conserve energy). #hiking

Most of them were in fact chosen because they would do the bidding of boards/industry/big donors and not make waves. They aren’t capable of much besides cutting and schmoozing.

A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers on the suet feeder this morning. 🪶

'Tech billionaires’ days moonlighting as climate activists are behind them. Companies and executives who talked a big game about their green bona fides just a few years ago—and poured millions into environmental causes—have lined up behind Trump.'

It is absolutely unconscionable how the federal workforce is being culled without any strategic plan or thought about the future of our nation or the young talented people who are being let go. People did not vote for the trashing of our nation’s science and technology infrastructure.

The federal government of the USA is being illegally dismantled. Stock market in the USA: đź‘Ť

I'm working on a couple of upcoming talks and can't get over how simply describing what is happening right now with attacks on the NSF, NIH, Diversity, etc. makes me sound like a raving lunatic. They've launched an all-out assault on empirical reality.
