Brushing my 7-year-old's hair before school this morning and she said "Guess what, we did active shooter drills yesterday and I'm in charge of barricading the door!" And I said "ooh nice" because I don't know we live in hell

There’s a video that shows a man teaching teachers to have a chair (4 legs) by the door. Slip the back left leg into the handle and turn the chair 45 degrees to the left. It will make the door almost impossible to open. It’s worth passing on to your teacher.
Active Shooter training was required yearly when I worked downtown @ State Capitol. It was very sobering. I was told to keep a heavy duty door stop at my desk as my cubicle was near a door so I bought one. Can't even fathom having this conversation with your young child. Hugs to you both.
This has reached a corner of the internet that's starting to act like the school has done something wrong. All the school is doing is preparing for the kind of emergency that happens all the time in this country.
I was surprised we only had one ASD when I was in school (and this was within a few years of Columbine, no less), but if MDA says there's evidence that they're not helpful, I believe them.
I recently had to do an active shooter training. And I was taught how to barricade the door with objects and I’m sure your daughter was as well. I am so sorry that you did not get the support you needed here. It sucks to be a parent right now.
I'm wondering now if people think she's barricading it with her BODY which is absolutely not the case and yes I would call the school to complain about that? The door is closed and locked, they push desks and chairs against it. Which still sucks.
It makes you feel all warm inside!! And just think, republicans gave us 400 million guns on the street! I am still looking for the good guys with the gun to protect people being violated! Why don’t all schools have metal detectors? It’s cheaper than losing your child!! Everything is corrupt!
My kid doesn’t particularly like school and it’s really hard when I have to make her go. What if something terrible happens and I could have let her stay home?
The first time my granddaughter was in shooters drill in kindergarten she came home crying, we had a hart time consoling her! Only in America’s dream are children afraid to go to school!
Only in "prolife" and progun America would we have to subject our children to such insanity. As a former teacher, I hated watching children being put through it, time and time again. Heartbreaking...
None of our children want to be facing the risk of death at school everyday.
Parents, I have intrusive panicked thoughts every time I hear sirens during school hours.
We all deserve better than this!!! We all deserve better.
We deserve better. A life where we have nature around us, don’t have to have 2 jobs, aren’t worried about our next meal, we get to spend time with our families, and own our own homes is, and has always been, possible. There is only a small number of people in the way of that. We can change this
sad that it is even a thing at all ,even sadder that people attack the messenger and miss the whole point , i have never lived there ,in the US but i easily understood the posts meaning and the thought behind it, what hell have we born our children into and that's exactly the right answer
Those are words a 7-year-old should never have to say, and that response should only be ever used for, 'We did a wildlife walk today at school and I saw birds with really bright feathers.'
Crushing, mine is 12 and I recall her saying "we did drills today, and I have a really good spot to hide- I don't think (insert friends name here) has a good spot we are going to find her a better one next time"
Mama, may God watch over you and your child, and may the mental burden be lifted
Gotcha. Yeah, people were so afraid of trans kids (what, .5% of the population in schools) they gave their future to Putin and Muskrat? ASS-tounding... ASS-Pounding!! 🫣
While the fact that they have to do this at all is trash, I highly recommend kids learn things like Stop the Bleed and how to put on a tourniquet at an appropriate age. It’s good for all sorts of injuries and can save lives.
It's a heartbreaking reality parents feel every day. The anxiety that increases bc our law makers refuse to address the problem proactively, leaving us only to be reactive is unimaginably painful.
Big hug to you with the strength it takes to be strong for your daughter, stay safe
When I was a crossing guard (we called them patrol boys even though there were girl crossing guards) in elementary school I never considered the fact that I was supposed to keep children from being run over and killed. All I knew was we were stopping cars so kids could cross the street.
Credit to the schools though because my kids have been doing these since preschool and have never felt scared. They're always handled as age-appropriately as possible.
I am so sorry. This is one of the insane reasons that while running a company- I pulled my daughter out school to homeschool her. Silver lining she’s learning about entrepreneurship, science and higher math.
All without active shooter drills
Same here! I couldn’t keep putting them through this so I pulled them after a teacher was shrieking at a student and tried to force him to sit in front of the door during a lockdown.
I am so sorry. You are an incredible parent and protector. Our kids really hit the jackpot💜 220 something shootings last year …. Commune living is sounding better and better
When a child gets excited about blocking a door because of an active shooter we've lost. That child should be excited about going to a museum or a book fair, not that. Is it nessasry? Unfortunately, yes. From my cold, dead hands indeed.
You’re comfortable with your child being responsible for barricading doors while an active shooter is around? I think this requires a talk with the teacher and school to understand why this is in practice and how it’s implemented. Immediately.
Yeah I got that. You're acting like the problem is with the specific situation here rather than the broader societal one where it may save lives if kids know how to keep someone from breaking into their classroom because we won't do shit about guns
Did I say it isn't problematic? I've got little sisters with kids and fucking hate the knowledge that they have gone through this shit, it disgusts me that there is just accepts that kids have to deal with this, but as someone who used to have to try to protect my mom from a psychopath as a kid
I understand. My son’s school recently had a lock down because someone climbed the fence to escape a gunman. It turned out the fence climber was high & hallucinating. Luckily no gunman but that was determined after police swept the school & neighborhood. Sad world we live in
Jesus wept. What is wrong with everyone who just accepts that their child has to learn about active shooter drill. Look up Dunblane. It happened once in the UK and guns were banned.
Went to school pickup and there were seven police vehicles out front, never received an explanation why. Sending my kid to school shouldn’t feel this scary
If the teacher is shot and killed, these children all need at least a plan. A chance.
A barricade may be as simple as tripping a special latch or putting down a door stop.
There are so many things to be done in an emergency and each child needs to know what to do, especially if their teacher has already been wounded or killed. 😓😓😓
This is not right, but in Felon47 dream world of pleasing his buddies at the expense of our lives and our children’s lives, I guess it can be summed up as he told the Iowa parents after a shooting “get over it”, is his attitude.
But are you? You're that big fat kid at school bullying the little kids. The one that cries when they get challenged back, and goes hiding behind the bigger kid, comrade.
This sucks but if they have books in the classroom like big hardcover thick textbooks it’s best to use that to cover your core in an active shooter situation bc even just one can stop a bullet from doing damage.
The school itself has books just the classroom that doesn’t. idk it just all makes me so sad how teachers know how to fix the system and can’t because schools are forced to teach to pass tests. I posted about it recently but for black history he learned about jay z…
No idea. My five year old I’m homeschooling is almost to the level of our 10 year old in school. For black history month this past week he learned about jay z…Indiana is just a mess educationally(and in general)

What world do we live in??
I say that as one who never had to experience 'active shooter drills.' Much less the threat that makes such drills necessary.
May your child ever be safe, @kristenmulrooney.bsky.social
I had to get behind the “door shelter,” and wait for her to say, “Room 4 clear!””
Parents, I have intrusive panicked thoughts every time I hear sirens during school hours.

Fact, I got two
That's okay man, 'cause I love God
Glorified version of a pellet gun
Feel so manly, when armed
Mama, may God watch over you and your child, and may the mental burden be lifted
Remember the “who taught these kids to make such effective barricades” dipshits during the Palestine protests?
Big hug to you with the strength it takes to be strong for your daughter, stay safe
All without active shooter drills
Why?
Guns.
*motions vaguely at America*
Seven-year-olds should not know the term “active-shooter drill,” never mind being regular participants in them.
There’s no stopping gun violence in the USA now.
Canada will never join in for that.
Sorry🇨🇦
A barricade may be as simple as tripping a special latch or putting down a door stop.
Freedom to grow up without fear seems pretty important.
Columbine was last century. Its unbelievable that nothing has changed, if anything hearts are hardened.

I've taught from elementary to the university.
