I get that. However, I will review most things I experience honestly with what I liked and what I didn't like. If it's not for me, I'll say it's not for me and ask what my readers think about it. Sometimes people will know they'll like it if I don't or what bothers e won't bother them.

I've once left a review which was not glowing. A 3 page depiction of rape for the entertainment of others felt egregious in its offensiveness.

I’ve never heard anyone outside my group of mates use the phrase ‘piss on someone else’s chips’ so it made me smile to see it in your post!
Also, that’s exactly why I wouldn’t review or rate a book that I didn’t enjoy. I hate the thought of tainting someone else’s enjoyment.

I feel like you can still review something and also not like it at the same time. You just have to recognize that it's not something for you and then maybe critique it from a technical standpoint perhaps?

Wouldn't it be nice to have also a review from such perspective? I mean, as long as it's constructive criticism and it aims to help (of course not referring to what you didn't like in terms of personal taste, but as an experienced reader). Idk if this makes sense

As someone who is in the process of writing her first book, this is refreshing. Having someone else read it and tear apart a five year journey scare the daylights out of me. I don’t mind criticism at all but meanness gets in my way
