I read a biography of him last year. As his career progressed, his speeches became increasingly religious. IMO he was most effective when he was speaking about his own experience in bondage. Perhaps he was uncomfortable talking about it. Completely understandable.

One of the secrets to understanding the current crisis? Notice that, by and large, both reporters and academics call Frederick Douglass an "orator" and an "activist." But Douglass was a journalist who ran a newspaper which freely mixed reported facts and opinion.
