I read a post yesterday saying that if you delete your X account, somebody can take and use your name.

An update. I let my X deactivation go past the 30 days. The account was wiped.
I went back to X to start a new account using a different email address. Requested my old user name @ancray, and it let me.
So yes, user names are recycled if you're worried about that. Just log out and don't deactivate.

After 30 days from starting the deactivation process on X, the account is deleted and presumably, the user name is back out there to be used.
