This is who Ru is today. Anyone (esp Europeans) who ignores this reality and complains abt alarmism; denies it by claiming essentialism; underestimates it by calling for compromise/normalization is as wrong abt Ru as Surkov is abt Ukr/Europe. This interview is a perfect example of wishful thinking. There is no fraternity between Ukraine and Russia, even if it once existed. Similarly, there is no ‘we’ and ‘us’ in relations with Europe. Russian solitude is not geopolitical - it is civilizational and after 2022 it got deeper.

I'm not sure if 'indefinitely' is the right term to describe the situation as I can't imagine a transfer of power there. Surkov's political system is as durable as Putin himself, and he won't last forever.
