Curiosity used its Mast Camera, or Mastcam, to capture this view of Earth(right) setting while Phobos (left), one of Mars' two moons, is rising. It's the first time an image of the two celestial bodies have been captured together from the surface of Mars.

ok... mars is kind of at opposition, so i guess earth would be a crescent like mars sometimes is. got it. i wonder which is the brighter 'star' for mars.. earth or venus?

Mars has pretty weak phases because it’s outside our orbit; it oscillates between full and gibbous for us. For Martians, the Earth would show a full range of phases.

Venus would probably be brighter than Earth even though it’s farther from Mars, because it’s more reflective than Earth.

To clarify for those who seem to have it backwards, Earth is the light-blue bright dot to the right of the crescent moon Phobos (it looks larger because it is closer to Mars).
