i said in the chat the other day that even though i'm a literal witch, i reckon i'm still closer to jesus' teachings than a significant number of american christians
I’m so glad my main exposure to Christian doctrine was St Francis of Assisi, if you are not embracing the poverty of Christ the charity and mercy how can you call yourself his disciple?
Disclaimer yes I am well aware that the Franciscan orders were highly culpable in the genocide of American indigenous people. But I think these actions were contrary to his core teachings of charity and poverty.
Yup. After I left I was able to recognize all the parts that aren't great. But believing strongly was why I originally left, and I'd say most of my core ideals haven't changed much.
and it’s pretty easy, as it were, to distinguish stories ascribed to Jesus of Nazareth from roughly his time period vs doctrine that has evolved over nearly two thousand years of the church being an organised institution(s)
Yeah. The hard part is having sufficient internal resources to be able to distinguish that good shit through the huge amounts of christian evangelical shovelware theology.
Thanks. I didn’t realize original sin was original in that sense.
(and I’m vaguely aware of the scholarship on the authorship of the gospels but was curious what approach/authors you use in case I ever wanted to look into it further but admittedly that day may never come)
Had a long conversation last winter with a Christian friend and somewhere in there she said you know for an agnostic you might be the most Christian person I know
I dunno it’s just I had a lot of progressive nuns for teachers and I took what they said to heart and I think lots miss the point
