Yeah well where I live, we aren’t getting the train before 2048 at the earliest, if they find the $. Meanwhile because of this idiocy, they’re already ripping out lanes on Bank, Queen, Wellington, Elgin, Laurier, etc. I’m not asking for more lanes, just stop taking away. 80 mins downtown by bus.
Yes extending the LRT to more communities is desperately needed in order to improve mobility for more people. Replacing on street parking with bus lanes on the streets you mentioned would go far in improving transit options in the short term.
Funny that the urban residents expecting suburbanites to ride the bus to work 2.5 hours a day are the same ones who won’t go to shows at the CTC once in a blue moon because it’s “too far.” Transit is not a viable option given our geography and the poor planning of the past.
I think you may be misunderstanding what I am advocating for. I am not against cars, they are amazing tools! I am against car-dependency, which is when our urban planning has made people dependant on cars for even their basic needs. The idea is to improve our urban planning so people have choice.
People in the suburbs voted in another mayor who clearly was not going to do anything to improve transit. If you don't like the terrible transit, write your councillor and the mayor, and tell them.
I wouldn't mind a show at CTC if busing there wasn't the Hunger Games.
To be fair, the real problem is the greenbelt, and the lack of cohesive city planning over the course of about 70 years, which resulted in a massively decentralized city. Not sure how that’s the mayor’s fault, but sure.
I think the main problem in Ottawa is *amalgamation* which gives rural and suburban councillors veto power when urban residents try to fix urban problems. It generates so much conflict. Let's agree to go our separate ways and just be neighbours.
Perhaps if the burbs hadn't voted overwhelmingly for another beige pants mayor who promised to keep taxes low, we would have seen some improvements by now.
Agreed about the poor planning, we definitely need to stop expanding.
Please don't forget that as urban residents we sacrifice our streets for your commute. I lived in Barrhaven, our street was suburban and quiet. There are fewer car owners on my urban street today than back in Barrhaven but the roads are wide & filled with strangers driving through
