I made the mistake of going from a marathon 120 hour playthrough of Kingdom Come Deliverance (AMAZING, PLAY IT) to Avowed, and Avowed just missed the mark for me. I got 17 hours in, and was well into the second region when I decided to drop it. Glad I played it via Game Pass rather than sinking $70! - ThreadSky

The main problem with Avowed is it feels like it's in between genres, and doesn't really succeed at any of them. The main example is that it feels like it should be a game that simulates an open world, but it doesn't. The NPCs are static. Only scripted ones react to stealing. It's shallow and bland.

Combat also is at odds with the type of open world game it appears to be. Fights that appear to be simple often spawn in waves of additional enemies (kind of like Dragon Age 2), so it feels cheap and spammy. It doesn't take long for combat to become more tedious than fun.

The other problem is its writing, which can't decide whether to take itself seriously or not. And despite some talented actors, much of the cast distracts from immersion. Finally, I think Avowed being part of the Pillars of Eternity universe did it a disservice. Requires too much homework.

I really wish Avowed had turned out to be Obsidian's take on The Elder Scrolls, but in the end, it turned out to be so much less ambitious that they're barely worth comparing. I hope The Outer Worlds 2 turns out better, because I quite enjoyed the first one, and Obsidian needs a win right about now!
