After reading, I was reminded of another statement on Luddism some years back, as it related to ed tech. A fresh read has me thinking in a host of aspects, and wondering where we are at now such questions, nine years later.
And now this third take on Luddism, “Tropical Luddites.” I agree with the author, as technology all applied, such as modified seeds for increased profit/production.
“Again, Luddism is not about the machines per se; it's about machines in the hands of capitalists and tyrants — in the case of ed-tech, that's both the corporations and the State, especially ICE and the police.”
“Luddism is about a furious demand for justice, about the rights of workers to good working conditions, adequate remuneration, and the possibility of a better tomorrow — and let's include students in our definition of "worker" here as we do call it "school work" after all.”
I am a huge fan of https://HumaneTech.com. They argue that we should only use "technology that protects well-being and builds our collective capacity to address humanity’s most urgent challenges."
Thank you for sharing this. I will follow and support their work moving forward. I agree, and yet struggle to find hope we can get there in scale/en masse within extreme capitalism.
Indeed, along with every other area of our lives and common goods and needs we’ve allowed unscrupulous capitalists to profiteer while causing great harm, for extreme profits.
I'm cautiously optimistic, actually. There seems to be both political will and progress on regulating AI. Regulation can provide necessary guardrails, and help even the playground.

harmful and extractive technology.
Now we are going for the arms by integrating it into core institutions like education.
