It has not escaped me that the cosmically-funniest outcome is that the US annexes Canada shortly after I move there, after years of being unable to move there 😅
My wife and I are seriously considering trying to move— I’m sure your story is not one that can be summed up in one “tweet” but curious to know why it has taken years for approval 🫠😅 congratulations!!
Oh, there are much faster ways! Part of the delay was even my choice (my father-in-law was sick and I didn’t want to be in a spot where I couldn’t travel back and forth and would miss his passing).
I also went “directly” for permanent residency, because my wife is Canadian, which has a higher bar.
So in short, don’t take my situation as evidence that it takes a long time. There were many factors aside from the process itself that made it take a while.
If you go the work visa route it can be significantly faster.
Yeah the work visa is a stitch too. My wife works remotely with a healthcare company as an accountant, they are an international company but I don’t know if her moving there will be seen as an asset. I am a musician lol so same thing, I don’t know if they’ll see me as bringing a ton of value in
either. But being a queer couple with a trans son, and a daughter, and being women, and the list grows everyday with reasons for us to feel like we should try to leave. We struggle with leaving our community, leaving the “fight,” and balancing our safety. It’s really been tough to know what to do.
I am so sorry to hear about your father in law. I just went through what I assume is something similar with my mother in law last year, my heart truly is with you and your family 🩵
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me! We live in Ohio so we’ve been talking about Toronto—
— we just have been unsure of the process. I also have a DWI from 2017 so I have to figure out if I need Canada’s forgiveness if we do go down that road 😂 I’m three years sober as of last Thursday so if I do need to do all of that it shouldn’t be an issue, it’s just a hoop to go through.
Yeah, the process can be intimidating. If you unsure of what the best route is for your family, it may be worth spending the money to hire an immigration attorney in Canada.
They usually charge a flat fee for the whole process and help you figure out with pathway has the best chance of success
Congratulations and welcome! 🍾🥂
As for your fears, don’t worry, not gonna happen. We are a tough bunch to go against because once we’re wronged, we don’t give up. 🇨🇦💪🏼
Welcome! Two bits of advice for moving - don't bring your car unless you really, really love it, and make sure the border agent gets the correct address for where to send your PR card.
Congrats! It was such a relief for me when I was finally out of immigration limbo. I don't know what the wait times are like now, but when I did mine, it took them over a year to even look at my application.
Congrats! You are so fortunate! I’ve extensively researched this despite being a high-value professional there w/ 🇨🇦relatives, I am 70 - too old to come out of retirement for PR. 🇨🇦 laws make gaining PR extremely expensive, difficult, & onerous.
Won’t let me DM you. But the best advice I can give is to get an immigration attorney in Canada.
I had a spousal sponsor, but I have friends that got residency without it. Process can take a while, so if you’re seriously considering it’s better to start early.

We will never be annexed the last time someone thought that was a good idea the location of the white house had to be changed.
Elbows up....
Canada 🇨🇦 🍁 Strong 💪
Thank you for choosing 🇨🇦
