I wonder whether (as well as the propaganda of the cold war), there's also that immediately after the war, populations are most interested in it being over; later they might look back at their country's liberation, which for Western Europe wasn't by the Red Army.

Simple facts WW1 decided on the Western Front - WW2 on the Eastern - if Normandy had failed the result would have been Red Army at the Channel and a very different 1950s
