They've basically become New Zealand First but without a bigger party of the right or the left who will go 'okay, we will let you have THIS half of your manifesto' for them.

Might that partially have roots in their 2010s governments? Needed support from other parties to govern twice and even their outright election win in 2015 was on a manifesto seemingly designed with coalition negotiations in mind.
Over and over again consequences for the UK demonstrate that you just can’t game politics, and yet people still insist on doing it; most noticeably recently the pro Cleverly faction in the parliamentary Tory party.
How much of this is 1. electrical demographics, 2. how much is intra-party demographics/politics and 3. how much is the Tories getting radicalised by the coalition holding back their id for 5 years?
And because they are permanent agitators they lose the ability to be either assertive or reassuring. The thing Badenoch has in common with Johnson is that so much time is spent riffing off and swerving that you perpetually run the risk of self-sabotage. People get tired out and won't listen anymore
