I think most of the people who use it have never gamed in their life. TCW for example has said I am being 'hyperbolic' and it's like, no, the term really is just dehumanising, that is what it means.

Oh yeah from the little I know about him I suspect he’d be fucking awful at it. It’s just weird seeing people use it to signal how they’re elite given how it’s usually seen
I think it’s more “I am a snob about gaming”. So I guess that is “he thinks I am stupid”. Really exciting sounding book coming out about all this by George Osborn (the gaming lobbyist not the Chancellor) bringing out some of this.
I found “we shared a panel at Cambridge” such an odd and revealing preface. I share a lot of panels at Cambridge, it doesn’t change what this word means, and the mere fact of agreement on a topic doesn’t mean that I am going to go “oh, okay, I am relaxed about your use of this horrible insult now”.
If I had written that profile of Emily Ratajkowski--the one that is basically just him hitting himself on the head with a mallet and woof-whistling for 1000 words--i'd want to remind people I was on a panel at Cambridge too.
It doesn't make it less offensive but its a D&D term originally and that all comes from Tolkien, and they called Obama the antichrist and all of us non player characters, they don't realize that Trump is Sauron and they are the Orcs
