In addition, maybe it has worked, maybe it hasn't. But need to abandon it anyway because otherwise what is the, uh, argument for the painful decisions in the budget later this year?

The government can't possibly finesse that our improved deal with the EU and our relations with Trump are both great, so great that here is a budget that, whatever is in it, people are going to hate parts of.
Labour had/has the perfect opportunity to "properly" reset our relationship with the EU but is blowing it, too scared of REFORM, the press and the so called red wall. At the end they're alienating many and gaining no one, while messing the economy even more.
I am never sure who is the target audience for this message, but maybe it’s just for Trump and no one else is expected to believe it or waste any time on it?
Does anyone truly believe you can manage relationships with Trump on anything? In addition to being untrustworthy and likely to renege on any deal, he is also erratic, his policy and mood depending on who he spoke to last/what he was watching on Fox. How do you do a meaningful deal with that?
