And, good news, the American Goldfinch that live year-round here are already turning a Dijon mustard color. Soon they will be big time yellow. #birds #πͺΆ
I would suggest following @theauldsthretch.bsky.social
#Ireland #Dublin based but still fascinating! Including the explanation why the evenings extend from the 13th December and the mornings from about the 29th! #ShortestDay #WinterSolstise #GrandAuldSthretch
Couldnβt agree more !
If I work a βnormalβ shift (in my workplace without any natural light ) I can go days without seeing daylight in midwinter , so to hear and see itβs improving is manna from heaven .
That also depends on where you live. I'm guessing I'm way closer to the Equator than you are, because for me it's only a 6 minute difference by the end of the week.
In this corner of Wales, we say that a day lengthens by a "cam ceilog" ( a cockerel's stride) between Christmas and New Year ...that I think may actually be the Old New Year (Hen Galan) of the Julian calender, that was
still celebrated here until quite recently.
Was in Pembrokeshire recently. Didnβt realise it was a quarter of a time zone away from London until I changed my location on the Met Office weather map.
I've installed this app that tells me how much more light there is from the previous day and it gives me a lovely boost when I wake up to this notification every morning
Ah, other daylight counting nerds. I use this app, more detail than most will ever need. My wife particularly* likes the way I tell her each day how much daylight we gained since yesterday, which is great after WinterS, but less so after SummerS - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vvse.lunasolcal&hl=en_GB
Completely. I'm very much a long day kinda guy, whereas my lovely partner is a 'great, I can get my snuggly scarves, gloves and big jumpers out' kinda girl.
Really noticed this yesterday β still broad daylight when I went out for a walk at 4.30 β even those few extra minutes of βοΈ make such a difference!
