I grew up with the 6502 and have a soft spot for it, but to be a learning too it has too many ‘bugger, you can’t do that with that register’ moments. The 65C02 would be a little better (at least you can Pull/Push X,Y directly!) and is still made if you want to keep it in the family…

… however I think the 6809, while more complex, is a more joyful assembly language programming experience with a somewhat more orthogonal instruction set.

6809 is nice but didn't take off just a bit late and expensive I think?
65c02 does take away a bit of pain. I like the indirect addressing without x or y.

You are right about the price - Wikipedia has it about 4x the price of a Z80 and 6x the price of a 6502 in 1981. Motorola had a habit of doing that, plus it was about 2 years later than the Z80, a 3 later than the 6502, so missed a lot of the 8-bit home computer market…

I still remember many of the hex op codes.. Eg A9, 8D for lda and sta.. Might be better to remember other things perhaps but some of this is now ingrained in my brain 😅

Same here! 6502 Assembler was the second programming language I learned, after BASIC. I even got called out in a library reading class for reading Rodney Zaks' "Programming the 6502"!

Same here, isn't it funny how in those days we went from high level straight to assembler.. In fact I like many just poked values into memory so more machine code than assembly language!

Ditto, I think! Although I learned the 6502 assembler mnemonics, I don't think my Commodore PET had an assembler so I had to do the manual poke stuff. I quickly moved on to a Beeb, so at least that problem went away.

When I was writing an OS in 6502 for a computer I designed in college many years ago, I got in so deep that I was literally dreaming in 6502 assembler! 🤓

I guess, it's a good second language, as it's great in teaching how to deal with given resources and how to implement something efficiently. But it may well be that you should have some experience with programming, already.
