Honestly think they should start by just extending more Hungarian local trains across the border. At the moment, for instance, trains terminate at Biharkeresztes, a village of 4000 people, instead of carrying on to Oradea, a city of almost 200 000, just a few miles further east.

There's interesting long term potential in running inter-regional services between Hungarian cities (Debrecen-Szeged-Pécs) via Romania (Oradea, Arad), Serbia (Subotica) etc.

I'm sceptical given how long it took to extend trains from Rajka to Bratislava or how few trains carry on from Hidasnémeti to Košice.

Hidasnémeti to Košice was upped from 2 to something like 9 a day a couple of years back. Rajka - Bratislava no one had suitable stock. So I am not sure either is a viable case?

I think generally the point is that what hasn't happened at one border is not necessarily a reason why something might not happen elsewhere. Even pre-Schengen traffic through Curtici was improving.

oh hell, the infra through there is terrible. That is going to be expensive! And you need a new river bridge at Szeged as well.

The only way I could imagine this working would be by leaving out Serbia.

Serbia is not in the Schengen area and won't join any time soon. In order for this to make sense you would have to run freight trains and the customs would be a nightmare.

I like to be the optimist and hope we will somehow get there at some point, or come up with creative solutions. But this is not what I expect to happen.

I think a proper buildup of Szeged Mako Temeshvar is much more likely to happen even if it's still very unlikely.

There are simpler schemes that would make more sense. I think politicians like to talk about these things, but even that's good in one sense.
