no, they “made it” because women couldn’t have their own bank accounts or credit lines until the 1970s and they were often subjected to being institutionalized by whomever advocated for it.
like yea, I’m sure there were people who loved each other and romance played into it. we cannot and should not boil it down the lack of “making it” simply to “laziness” because it minimizes the experiences of women who got married out of necessity or had no way to leave an unhappy situation.
