Am I the only one who thinks AUKUS is a great big bloody dud but also feel the budget is superseded by fears re USA, Middle East, Turkey, Europe? Can't help but see the threatening black clouds with America's DANGEROUS clown show RACING towards societal breakdown & it's only March with 3.9 yrs 2 go!
I’m still not convinced. Why can’t we be like NZ or Switzerland? And we have no way of defending our coastline without allies so need diplomacy and negotiation
NZ has a military and is part of a number alliances. Switzerland has a history of neutrality but was happy to help support Nazis during WWII. Democracies need to be band together for mutual defence and to stop expansionist countries.
Given fact that China will take the US approach to Ukraine as a green light. I think all democracies will have to up defense budget probably to around 2.5-3% of GDP (Australia is at 1.9%). Now whether the submarine is worthwhile I am not versed enough in military strategy and procurement to say.
This is looking at it in a misleading and evasive way. The issue isn't whether Oz should forego the AUKUS subs in favour of civilian projects, it's whether it would be better, in a dangerously uncertain world, to spend that money on other defence kit, aircraft, say, or unmanned subs. #AusPol
I have yet to see a battle scenario that explains how these subs could be effective. It's a lot of money, but there's no real explanation for the public to justify it.
I want to see one of these little charts for what could we buy if we taxed fossil fuel companies & arseparts like Murdoch. And would be nice to see them in pride of place at every Greens election pop up stall
That sub can be and attack from anywhere, meaning that if China tries it, Australia could retaliate almost immediately and deliver an attack on the Chinese Capital or, a strategic military base. In fact, the sub could attack multiple sites if necessary.
Not saying it's the best argument, but
Does Australia have any defence against China? If China invaded tomorrow, what chance do you have?
Why do you think China was angry when they heard you were getting a nuclear sub?
They have a massive arsenal.
Don’t be naive. They already circle your island.
And when Russia, China, and the US decide to carve up the world, how does one defend its sovereignty?
I get it. The cost is astronomical, but that is a supplier problem not a buyer problem. If the world right now wasn't so annex happy, then your argument is valid.
Thanks Scomo for leaving us with a debt for a dud. How much money do you think Trump will squeeze us if we try to cancel it? Tell us David, how would you go about cancelling it?
What do you think the chances are of exiting AUKUS if we end up with a hung parliament after the next election? Could the cross bench convince the minority leading party?

What threat does China actually pose in the region and what are their intentions?
My experience with their Navy is now five years past but they had some formidable AIP boats...
If he gets Ukraine, who knows what’s next.

And they won’t be telling the ADF, the RAN or the Australian Govt anytime soon.
The Russians will know first.

Does anyone think that Boris Johnson or Morrison have any understanding of world politics …
Or anything.
Not saying it's the best argument, but
It's not that there isn't money, it's that we aren't as important.

I’d rather have the equipment to defend our rights thanks very much.
