Right on red sucks as a driver too, you have to watch for an opening in cross traffic to your left, and also pedestrians and bikes to your right if the light changes before you turn. Frequently with a driver behind you that can't comprehend anything beyond 'car in front of me in my way'.

I love right on red. My favorite is left on red when two one-way streets intersect. I'm also an avid cyclist who pedals in urban areas.

It can be safe if you understand the law. You have yield to literally everything to make the right. You have to make a full stop first. Enforce this and its fine

Melbourne doesn't allow left turns on red and it's so much easier to cross as a pedestrian

Our city just installed a traffic light for the right turn lane. Drivers disregard it. Meanwhile pedestrians are treated to a new walk button shouting, "WAIT!"
It is a long wait and then you get to plow into the intersection with the ignored traffic light 😬

The city where I live (Hamilton, ON) implemented no right on red at numerous intersections in the downtown core. I find it very annoying when I'm driving, but then I remember oh yeah they did this because people were regularly getting run over by careless drivers. We (drivers) did this to ourselves.

There are a number of streets in my area that have no right on red but the green parallel to the walk is timed to match the walk so you have people in cars racing to turn while you’re in the crosswalk and people who ignore the no right on reds as well. It’s a shitshow & the signal is much too short.
