We have treated heart worm positive dogs as they come through our rescue. It’s not that expensive at all. We do slow kill…over a year or so. One weekly dose. I think it’s ivermectin but it shouldn’t be hard to find out.

He was standing inside the vet’s office, in front of the vet, while telling me about it. He wasn’t asking for help, he was just sadly telling me about it because I asked if his pup was okay.

I am not sure? I have never had to deal with anything like that. When I tried to look it up all I get back is the cost for preventative meds not meds for once a dog has it.

I looked it up and I’m shocked. The quote I found was $500 to $6000! It said the cost depends on the size of the dog. That’s absolutely shocking to me.

$15,000 is not at all what the cost of heartworm treatment should be. Treatment is usually meds (the usual preventative heartworm meds) and rest (dog can't be overly active). There are organizations that help homeless people with pet care ~ something to search for in your area perhaps.

$15,000 does seem too high, especially for a younger pet.
Is there a veterinary school in the area ? Contact them.

Finally, this is the heart breaking consequence of having a pet. Sometimes it helps to get a second pet.

I misunderstood your post when you said pup. For an older pet the medications can be expensive.
A veterinary school is a good source of info. and they also may treat the dog.
His love for the dog cannot be replaced.
