A short summary of the #ElixirLang London meet-up held yesterday: we dove into the source for LiveView’s assign_async/3, trying to figure out how it works. This was accomplished by jumping around the source code in an editor. No preparation done in advance.

Some highlights: there’s a good amount of both compile and runtime checks aimed at helping developers writing efficient code (e.g. avoiding copying the socket, or returning correct values).

Links and monitors are employed to make sure crashes in either tasks or views propagate correctly and no logic runs uncontrolled.

All in all, what stood out is that when writing a framework it may be necessary to increase complexity of the code to provide a good developer experience.

I think the experiment was successful even if it was more difficult than expected. Not preparing in advance meant discovering things together, and that pushes people to participate more into the discussion.
