I like hearing the pitch for an hour and getting the free stuff. Recently given $1600 of spend at the Spa in a resort, which I then turned into multiple couples massages! But agreed… any industry that is able to fund an entire new industry around trying to get you out of your contract cant be good.
The only ones I’ve heard people speak positively about are the Disney ones. But I think they’re just hypnotized by the mouse and overestimating their savings and underestimating their spend.
Our family owned a few in Mexico in the 1980s. You own them in perpetuity, have to pay sizable yearly maintenance fees, and still need to buy the flights. And even then, you're just going to the same place every year! I can't figure out how that was ever a thing. Seems like a terrible investment.
Growing up, we would take people’s timeshare weekends in the dead of winter. My dad’s from New England and likes winter beaches, so March in Maryland was fine. Everyone was bundled up and my crazy siblings went swimming. Had the ocean to themselves. Fond memories, but my family is odd.
They can stay at any of the many properties, theyre really well equipped and spacious (like a mid-high end hotel), and it takes a lot of the handwringing out of the trip planning process since it narrows down your choices
my parents got one years ago, used it a couple times, but they wish they could get rid of it now. neither of them are healthy enough to travel, and no one else in the family has any interest in using it either. basically now its just a waste of money.
my parents got suckered in thinking they would travel all the time once they retired and it would be worth the cost, but then health problems got in the way. there's no way i'm inheriting that nonsense.
