Unfortunately, Professor I must disagree. Neither of those parties are Socialist. On the other hand, the winning far-right party has adopted all the same policies as the AfD. Thus 60% of Germans have voted Far-Right & Nazi. Europe is heading for war. Luckily, it's not a world war.

Neither the Voters nor the Leadership of the BSW see themselves as leftist. In an Analysis by DVPW they see themselves to the right of the centrist SPD. Looking at policy proposals they seem to be socially conservative and economically ambiguous.

The shift to the right is not necessarily characterized solely by the AfD getting 21% but more importantly the parties of the center adopting the AfDs policy positions to attract their voters therefore legitimizing and mainstreaming right wing framing on social issues.

This is really great to hear. Obviously the rise and right wing populism is alarming; however, to see a rise and left populism as well gives a tentative hope. I only hope the moderate left is able to see the writing on the wall and rise to the occasion and at least build a progressive coalition

I wouldn't call the BSW a (far) left party. It was founded by a woman with a big, self-inflated ego (yes, her name is in the party's name), who made millions by many many appearances in talk shows. Their policy is mostly pro-Putin and they blame migrants for low paid jobs.

Good summary. I agree. Please do not call BSW a left party. They did not bother to vote along the far right on some immogration law few weeks ago and consistently repeat Putin‘s narrative that he is just defending himself. Hope to not see these Russian puppets in the Bundestag again.
