Having read about Albert Staehle, I think my father must have been mistaken when he said he'd met him (or perhaps the man he met was a liar!)

The man he met, he met sometime between 1995-2010, and Staehle passed away in 1974.

Assuming the story hasn't been completely garbled in the telling, and that the illustrator he met was truthful, he may have been Richard Black, creator of the original "Mr. Clean".

The "Smokey the Bear" association may just be an accretion to the original story.

I'm a bit concerned that the batters both on board and on deck are crowding the third base line. It's also concerning fans are only on the third base line but also right next to home plate distracting the umpire.

I get it, it's hard to keep cats in their place. But it would be for their own good.
