I was in Yellowstone a few years ago to see the wolves in Lamar valley. Saw the massive positive outcome from reintroduced them.
Not only did they not attack, you could only spot them with very strong binoculars or scope.
As people continue to talk about the search for non-human intelligence they don't seem to realize that it already exists here on Earth. Wolves for example are incredibly smart which is may be why most packs are led by females. Yeah, the alpha male concept was wrong.
Very essential,an intricate part of the balance of nature. Humans have become so removed from nature and our earth that we have no understanding of the interconnected state of this planet.
Oh thing that humans have a trait of doing is killing off apex predators because we think they are a MASSIVE danger to us; when in reality, they aren't.
Then humans either need to step in and fill the role, hope another species does, or watch the ecosystem become unbalanced.
The predator and prey strange mix allows a balance in other species kingdoms whereas this is a problem in our species society, only law enforcement and legal challenges are the defense against possible predators and vice versa of course.
in Finland there's a significant amount of ppl that wants all the wolves killed, and they shut their ears completely when anyone tells anything about the balance in ecosystem. I'm rly ashamed of those ppl.
Once while backpacking solo in Yellowstone NP I camped near a stream where a small pack of wolves had killed something in the willows the opposite bank. The stream was a natural barrier, I stayed on one side and they on the other. They were curious about me but never aggressive. It was epic.
we've tried that concerning other issues and nothing positive happened cause we have a far right government. not that we wouldn't need to continue doing so.
We have a Fascist government too,now We can and will find large land owners that want to help their land, and that means leaving the wolves to control the ungulates.
California now has about nine or 10 Wolf packs. We had none prior to OR 7 crossing the border from Oregon about 10 years ago. Great progress. Happy Thanksgiving.
Well, of course wolves are essential! I mean, who else is going to keep the deer population in check and help maintain a healthy ecosystem? Not to mention, they make for some pretty entertaining nature documentaries
Unfortunately, they are massively persecuted especially in the Northern Rockies. The State of Idaho has a $200,000 annual contract with a wolf-hating trapping “nonprofit” to pay bounties — up to $2000 per corpse, including pups. It’s a real cesspool.
Wolves are needed in the majority of ecosystems where they are the dominate pursuit predator. They do need to be managed as with any other wild animal species as the natural boom and bust cycles between predator and prey do not function in the fragmented habitats humans have left them.
That cattle ranchers can get reimbursed for by our GOVERNMENT generally more than the bovine was worth in the first place. I have zero empathy for cattle ranchers leasing the land they graze their herds on from the US GOVT. None.
Absolutely. We the public pay for the bovine treat and I for one am happy to contribute. Also, if allowed to coexist with us, the wolves would keep deer, elk, moose, rabbits, voles, mice, and other wildlife in check. Making an healthier environment for all.
Here in Canada they get blamed for the decline of caribou. But we all know it is human intervention that is causing it. It just gives provincial governments, ie Alberta and British Columbia, the liberty to cull them, in not very nice ways either. Poisoning or shooting them from a helicopter.
That’s terrible and I wish her a speedy recovery -but- you are significantly more likely to die sitting on the toilet than you are to even be bitten by a wolf.
As is all animal species their contribution to the ecosystem that we humans take for granted have been villainized even in fairy tales as self sustaining predators and should be eliminated. The fact remains they are considered less profitable thus have diminished value.

Except for humans.

Wolves are actually harmless towards people with fewer than 2 or 3 people having been killed in the last 100 years.
I've lived with them for years without a single incident.
I saw a wolf in AZ walking past a herd of cattle, with a rabbit dangling from its jaws.
The whole species chain has flourished since the reiintroduction of Wolves in Yellowstone.

And, slightly aside, when crossed with the domestic dog ( shepherd or male mute ) they make incredible companions.
Mucking about with keystone species detrimentally affects environment & eco system.
Watched a doc re their reintroduction to Yellowstone, fascinating. Beautiful animals & vitally important.
We've got to learn to live within our eco system, not devastate it for money!
She was not bitten; it was a brutal attack…. Very violent. There will be no speedy recovery for her.
