This isn't about ensuring food purchased with SNAP benefits is healthy. The GOP is also trying to cut Medicaid...so it's not like they'd be bearing the cost of poor health outcomes anyways.

This is about restricting benefits, and reducing people's autonomy to make choices about what they eat.

A new ‘welfare queen’ myth is taking shape in the SNAP debate.

“If someone wants to buy junk food on their own dime, that’s up to them … But what we’re saying is, ‘Don’t ask the taxpayer to pay for it and then also expect the taxpayer to pick up the tab for the resulting health consequences.’”
