I have come around to this in recent years, but I think it's hard for those in, just coming out of, or tangentially connected to certain sectors of academia to accept.

This idea contradicts the more classic 'marketplace of ideas' and higher values of free speech.

I think it's past festering. The infection has taken over and it's now a zombie. It's hard to see how rewarding that content with clicks and attention is a force for good. There's a lot of people doing good work that could be highlighted instead.
