Flying home from Dublin a couple of weeks ago - we chased the sunset for 3-4 hours heading west to Seattle.
No, if you've ever been out in a sailboat or even viewing the sun through cloud cover, the rays radiate exactly as shown, though rarely as beautifully symmetrical.
It’s an illusion of perspective. Just like with railway tracks, or a roadway disappearing into the distance. Parallel in all cases, but look like they converge towards a “vanishing point”.

Yup, they are.
It appears much more like a prism effect.
My dad was, among other things, an artist and art teacher, and we had many such discussions when I was growing up.
