This is a good article and a pointed reminder to legislators. But to imply that Wallace's legacy is anything but... complex...is selling history short.

Peggy Wallace Kennedy is a very admirable person and absolutely not her father. And I can’t say she’s wrong about George’s private regrets. But we know he “apologized” to Black civil rights activists like John Lewis and Joe Reed by shifting blame to unnamed others for his actions.

I also can’t stress this enough: even beyond his reprehensible attitudes toward Black Alabamians, George Wallace was a *terrible* governor. He was bored by administration; he allowed corruption to thrive, and he was almost completely disengaged in government by his fourth term.

Texan here. It’s a typical problem in red states. Politicians have plenty of ambition but no real interest in governing. They let lobbyists write their legislation.
