I think there’s a very volatile mood afoot, everywhere. People are churning. Even though, through a historical lens, more people on the planet are living better lives, 24 hr news makes us more aware of who is left behind, inequality etc, breeding resentment and discontent.

Part of this reflects Labour’s missteps, partly its anti incumbency and greater volatility, bur beyond that there is a deep unhappiness with the status quo and life in modern Britain. Our democracy is not in a healthy place.

Talked to a previously sane friend earlier who had a go at Victoria Derbyshire for claiming Clarkson bought his farm to avoid tax. She was genuinely shocked when I pointed out she was quoting him.
