Originally, and for a long time, it was called The Cheeseshop from the Monty Python skit. The funny thing was while the MP cheeseshop had no cheese, The Cheeseshop had lots of "cheese". During some past humor purging era, we went all corporate and changed the name. I still call it The Cheeseshop.

My understanding was that CheeseShop was always an internal name, and that the publicly-used name was always PyPI dating back to 2002 to replace Vaults of Parnassus. Ref:

It wasn't going to be that way, but discussions at PyCon about managers not taking us seriously meant we never made the Cheeseshop name the official one.
