The "we" who were at the richest period he's talking about are the wealthy elite of the Gilded Age. The rest were exploited for their labor and lived in poverty with little education or health care.

True. But even the wealthy elite didn't all make out ok. panics/recessions/depressions wipe out large fortunes as well as countless small savings.

sure, eventually, but they did better, longer than the non-wealthy, non-elite masses. Dictators eventually fall as well. The denial is rampant about what history tells us about how it always ends. They always think that this time it will be different for them.
