At the risk of sounding a little insane, it feels like an intentional and targeted culling via starvation. Top earners and business leaders basically regard most humans as livestock. Stuff like "longtermism" being such a popular ideology among them all but says that.

I think given some of the superrichs quiet obsessions (water, farmland, multiple citizenships, Mars, crazy bioengineering) they do believe climate change and other massive changes will permit them to withdraw from society while retaining control over it. They think they’re gonna be seasteading
