unfortunately i dont think there is any future in steady writing jobs generally outside of a very few outlets. the one-two punch of facebook and VCs killed the industry. it’s either move somewhere cheap, downsize, and permafreelance or switch careers
the only reason i can afford not to have a day job right now is i have no kids or car, live somewhere cheap, and have socialized medicine. it was already happening but i think major US cities are going to become less and less centers of cultural production moving forward
I keep commenting on what a large percentage of English-language streamers and YouTubers - especially in more niche interest areas - live up here in Canada.
I think health care is a huge part of the industry's survivorship bias.
I'm not a influencer of any kind but my god, guaranteed healthcare would cut like 70% of the financial stress off my shoulders. I would be free to switch jobs and make more money. It's such a ball and chain here.
i moved to austin in 97 largely bc it was/is a creative hub, but in 2005 i could get a 2/1 duplex for $525 and now a 1/1 apartment is $1300. that plus everything is more expensive now. boom. i work 6 days a week and make art when i can, for myself. and that sort of has to be good enough for me.
Yeah, as much as it feels like you could make the "gaming industry avengers" at this point...that money still has to come from somewhere and people are pretty patreon'd out. I can only put $10 a month in so many piles.
I created a games writing aggregator platform that combines all games writers across all writing platforms to help writers get that independent funding for their hard work.
Hopefully people start putting money into the hands on their favourite writers
The future of games journalism is either permalancers getting paid $50 for a 1500-word guide they need to bang out in 4 hours or having the in-depth stuff written by people with full-time jobs who freelance as a hobby and it sucks ass

the US will no longer be a cultural center, and if your job or career is in or related to the arts/culture...
if you aren't fucked right now, you will be in the coming years
