This is only the flight computer, the plane fuses information from its sensor on a level never achieved on a plane before. All this computation and electrification requires so much power that the aircraft can generate almost the same amount of power as an Airbus A350.

Autonomy has been here for a long time, we have built drones that are dropped from bigger aircraft that can fly in swarms taking advantage of lift generated by doing formation flights.

There are bombs that are programmed to scan for and prioritize certain emitters (GPS jammers) and go after them while disregarding their original intended target while still sticking to rules of engagement that were programmed in!

I think the substantial difference is maybe in generating the autonomy.If I got this right those systems you described are highly sophisticated programs relying on extensive libraries but they are not capable themselves to self-generate new sets of data/or create new connections within their library

The F-35 is able to learn new things about emitters it sees in the wild and catalog them. Aegis is also capable of doing so.

So, I don't think new generative IA will get us in the short-term better performances than these legacy weapons, but I would say that it considerably lowers the cost of "autonomy". You don't need a supercomputer, its added cost, weight and power, to begin target identification now.

No, we started calling radio-controlled target planes "drones" in the 1930s. Some think it's because the Brits had a drone aircraft called the Queen Bee, but the interval between when that aircraft entered service & when US sources started calling them drones was only like a year, so I am skeptical

To add to this, the F-16, which first flew in like 1974, was deliberately designed to be unstable in flight. The fly by wire system keeps it from falling out of the sky. The pilot just tells the computer what he wants to do, there’s no manual controls
