I live in one of the most monoculturally white areas of the UK. At the last election I was dumbfounded by the number of people complaining about immigrants coming over here and taking our jobs.

People are complaining because no political party will explain that if we need mass immigration. The UK birth rate has plummeted thus there is a massive demographic time bomb ticking. So we need 4 to 6 million for immigrant workers to pay tax for pensions as we population ages.
I'm reminded of that scene in The Two Towers. King Theodon says, "Who can stand in the face of such reckless hate?" Aragorn replies, "Ride out with me."
We all need an Aragorn.
I don't think Americans should ignore their neighbors; however, in politics, priorities must be clearly set; and the priority of every state, including the American state, is the well-being of its citizens.
Perhaps.
Although we do have a representative democracy, so other constituencies can vote according to their concerns.
This is the danger of populism - charismatic voices whipping up people's emotions over things of which they have no experience.
SAME! I live in a rural area of the US that is ~ 96% white.
My friend told me his blue collar co-workers were bitching about "immigrants stealing our jobs," and he's certain most of them have never even met an immigrant.
Absolutely not. Florida found this out firsthand after they passed som strict laws around immigrant workers. Their entire justice system had to come out and say they weren't going to enforce the law because their economy immediately took a hit from all the jobs that suddenly had no one to do them
I had my roof replaced last year, all Mexicans. Only one spoke English. Got house painted a month later, same situation. But every bid I got was given by a white guy…🤔
Not at all. Most jobs that are available to any kind of immigrants here are mostly field work, laundry, cleaning services, lawn care, and manufacturing factories. All labor intensive jobs no one wants to do.
There's no job that no one is willing to do, with the right pay and working conditions. Large employers have gotten themselves permission to hire workers in variously precarious legal statuses, who therefore can never organize for the better treatment Americans would insist on.
Complaints about illegal immigration are almost never directed to the demand side for some reason, even though that's where--speaking of coyotes and CEOs and everyone in between--the true roguery happens.
No, they are intended to be done by the less capable Americans and teens as an entry-level job to learn hard work and responsibility. Those jobs have NEVER been intended to be "careers".
sure we have those but the GOP made sure they are limited and are not willing to expand the limit even though businesses that use them are asking for more. they can't run on a non issue so make it so the immigrants have to fight each other to come here. it is all about divide and conquer.
Most people who come here to work would not stay if it was easier to go back-and-forth across the border. They would come here to work and then they would head home to their loved ones.
I'm not sure about america, but here in the UK we have an aging population that will need to be replaced, or else we run out of workers. I cant say for sure, but since multiple big countries including China are currently dealing with this, America might need to start bringing in more immigrants.
And do you realize how tone deaf your message is to those here legally that work these jobs?
Did the last election teach you nothing?
There has been a seismic shift in labor leaving our party. And it is comments like yours that are at the top of the list for reasons why.
Undocumented Immigrants make up more than 40% of the construction workforce in California. This is a low estimate and is based on self reporting eligibility by those surveyed.
No! Who is going to get out there early and work in the heat and any other conditions. Look how many people still work from the comfort of their home!!
Not at all. Removing the people who grow and pick your food, clean your bathrooms and hotels and homes, care for your aging parents, clean and build your streets and roadways and fight your Wars never ends well.
Nope. Most of the jobs immigrants take are the ones the citizens won't do. The immigrants are very hard workers and for the majority of them, they are so thankful to be here, they will do almost any job. They also get a lot of abuse from some really shitty employers as well.
There is no such thing as a stolen job in the first place. Nobody can just show up in your place and start receiving your paycheck. In the highly unlikely event that any immigrant ends up in your job, it's because your boss/company *gave* your job to that immigrant.
From somebody in the trades who does this work on a daily basis. I can assure you there were PLENTY of legally documented tradespeople who wanted those jobs. Just not for circa 2000 wages.
My wage adjusted for inflation should pay 78.00 an hour.
You’d be lucky to get 55.00 right now.
I live in an agricultural area. Getting people to come and harvest the fruit and things that can’t be done with machines is difficult, because it’s hard work and doesn’t pay well. Used to be migrant workers would come up, do the work, get paid and bring it back to their families.
Some time ago, Fox did a story interviewing people who were outraged that Mexicans were sneaking of the border and stealing their jobs. This was in Alaska.
And it's interesting how often the same people complaining about 'immigrants stealing their jobs' also complain about immigrants 'being lazy', like which is it?
I, a Canadian, have a friend who once told me we should send all immigrants back where they came from because they deserved to be here less than him as his grandparents came in 1952. I said by your logic you go back to where you came from because my 9th great grandfather came here in the 1600s.
I live in semi rural Carmarthenshire where dark skin is a rarely seen and there was reform posters all over the place at the last election. Absolutely ridiculous.

The MAGA base is not at all interested in good jobs or a living wage, this seems crystal clear at this point
