Last time it rained in LA was in May. Everything is bone dry then you add high winds and nothing can be done. Northern California got lots of rain last year, but not So Cal. California now has a year round fire season.

The big difference this time is that the big fires are in LA proper and not further in the county, like in 2020, etc.

Also, the winds are so bad it’s made the fires expand much faster and it grounded flights of aircraft to slow the fire down.

When the Santa Ana winds blow from inland toward the coast (the usual pattern is winds blowing from the Pacific to blow all our smog into the Central Valley), bad fires can happen.
Here in NorCal we call them the Diablo winds, which is even more apt.

According to Greg Mullins former NSW Fire Commissioner who has worked in US with US firefighters & knows region on RN that it was due to numerous good rain seasons/growth, followed by extreme dry / no winter rain and those 160km winds. As he expected with climate change.

SoCal has seen .13 inches of rain since May. Combine that with more vegetation than normal from the past two years extra rainy winters along with extreme windstorms. With climate change there is no longer a safe season in CA, wildfire danger is year round now. I live in NorCal FYI

To add what others have mentioned here, it may surprise some Aussies that Southern California has eucalyptus trees (introduced). We, as Aussies, don't need to be told how they burn in fires.

Reports it started in someone's garden. With dry conditions & the "devil winds" spread way faster than expected, planes couldn't be used & water was lost.

Horrendous. Sadly 5 have died but looking at the news reels it's miraculous that number is relatively low.

I think the worst case scenario is a dry January but I wouldn’t rule out Late July and August here.
