Almost every American university and college that does substantial biology research is able to do so because of federal support. Hundreds of faculty, postdocs, and students at my university alone. I cannot stress enough the damage this will do to people, and to US supremacy in research.

To add, most biotech and industry management are trained in universities using NIH funding. Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, etc all train industry professionals through NIH funded research programs. Lose the NIH and we lose the training, and the groundwork for new patents and technologies.

NIH funded research gave us the most immediately useful information of how SARS-CoV-2 was mutating *during* a pandemic: now those skills are being used to monitor how H5N1 (bird flu) is emerging as a human pathogen as well. This is not worth communicating or funding?

The groups of experts who decide which scientific research proposals are in the top ~10% for importance and impact on health, and therefore can win funding from NIH. Study sections only meet 3x per year. If they can't meet, scientists might have to shut down their research and lay off their staff.

Thanks, but for those of us with lots of health issues who can't work more than part-time hours, I don't see how that would work. Although right now lots of places look a lot better than this mess.
