Following the rule of law to punish those that claim to be all about the rule of law when they break the law? Novel concept. Let's see that in America. Makes sense to me.
She was found guilty of embezzlement, not by opponents, not by the establishment but a jury! No law abiding person is going to revolt about this most guilty of persons whatever your political persuasion. Shame it didn't happen to trump who deservedly warranted the same outcome.
Still, too much of a slap on the wrist. What else would such a conviction bar her from regarding employment in any other field than politics? Would anyone else than someone like her be seeing prison time? Still doesn't sound like a long enough 'sentence.'
Garland and the judges let America and the world down. For what? Due process? The same due process trump is denying to other legal Americans now? Shame.
I’m sure the French saw what happened here in the US and immediately took action to keep it from happening there. We are a powerful negative symbol of what can happen if vigilance lapses.
The crimes happend between 2004 and 2016. So It took over 9 years.
I'm quite confident even Merrick Garland would have convicted Trump in 5 more years.
Well, we still have our fair share of active, corrupted and/or convicted politicians... But at least, yes, some of them don't get away with it. And a small victory is still a victory 🙌
Is political corruption so endemic in the US, that it's impossible to act because the rot is so deep.
Do the corrupt become politicians because that's where the major league of corruption is to be found 🤔
We need to watch this carefully, trump and fellow Putin puppets have already chimed in,he didn't know nothing about missing soldiers in Lithuania,or mistakes in his mass deportations, but boy how quickly he jumped on this ,it's staggering!!!
This should've happened the first year that Biden was in office. Wait two years cause you're worried about it being political. Well it wasn't political. He broke the law.
I still don’t understand why so many American voters think it’s a good idea to have a failed businessman, multiple felon, convicted con man, rapist, likely pedophile, and obvious Russian puppet in high office!
We have a bunch of chicken shits in congress failing miserably at what they swore to do, uphold the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
Musk was whining about it with far-right parrots,🦜🦜🦜 acting like laws don’t matter if you're on the right—as if every conviction is an injustice and evidence means nothing to them.
We should note they answer every single objection the same way.
Wonder how the judge feels now, since this was a "damned if I do, damned if I don't"-decision. Sure don't want to be in her shoes now, especially as she gets currently slammed by all parties of the political spectrum.
Worst is that Le Pen isn't out of the race - even if she's barred...
It's because they're learning from watching America's democracy being destroyed by their own government. Canada learned quickly voting for Mark Carney after watching their neighbors make a mistake in voting for 🍊💩.
America, look how Fking simple that was! Watch & learn.
Don't get too excited. The bitch tries to spin it just like Trump and claims victimhood. And the media is helping, because they're sprineless assholes.
Thankfully we’re seeing robust, differentiated discussion in France & other European countries. Sure, there’ve been reactionary, malevolent & partisanship responses directly from her pals in Moscow, Budapest, Rome, DC. But the media are focusing on the independence of the judiciary & rule of law. +
Tonight’s @artefr.bsky.social @28minutes-arte.bsky.social was tremendous (per usual). A constitutional law scholar surprisingly had trouble weeding out the role of politics in the court decision - was having a bad day, maybe - but the other commentators were spot on.
Just a thing or two? I'm thinking that list is at least 100 times longer. 200 times if you have to include #Republikkkans. There's a reason people in some states want to join Canada. #justsayin
Right on Tim. Good observation. How about the South Korean former president and the former Brazilian president too. All discredited and denounced. Trump's time is coming too. Lordy, does he deserve to be discredited, too.
Senator Booker and all Senators and elected representatives need to loudly and repeatedly call for the IMMEDIATE resignation of Trump and everyone in his administration and the immediate resentencing of Trump for his 34 felony convictions
Yes ... that said it just took 10 years (beginning of the investigation in March 2015 !) to get to this outcome. She still had the opportunity to run for the presidential election in both 2017 and 2022. She lost both times against E. Macron, thanks to the rally of all the other parties behind him.
America... from the "Shining City on a Hill" to a cautionary tale in only 8.5 years, courtesy of the very worst people on the planet, MAGA Republicans.
First step is to get rid of career politicians, on both sides. When you get someone who's been in office for 30 years, they forget how to do anything else. They'll do what they have to in order to stay in office.
I agree. There are other ways to serve the country and build community.
Leaders know how to pass the torch instead of hogging the glory and power. Build a movement that'll outlive you instead of dying in office and leaving a vacuum and chaos.
Take notes, Congress.
Pay attention, SCOTUS.
Watch the news, America.
THIS is what we're fighting against.
Remember that old saying from high school history class?
Power corrupts ... and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Elon Musk defense of Marine Le Pen—convicted of embezzling €4 million from the EP—stating, “When the radical left can’t win via democratic vote, they abuse the legal system to jail their opponents. This is their standard playbook throughout the world,” is about protecting fascists who break the law.
Don't even look at Brazil and how they're dealing with Bolsonaro, then. If anyone asked beforehand, I'd expect the US justice system to work and Brazil to be a banana republic. And yet, here we are, in the fun timeline.
France, Brazil, the Philippines, Slovakia, Georgia, South Korea, Ukraine, and Romania, off the top of my head, have all stood up to their autocratic politicians. If they can, surely the bastion of freedom and independence and democracy that the United States has always wanted to be can do it too?
America puts white and wealth on a pedestal. It's incredibly rare for a wealthy white man to ever be held accountable. Funny that the laws are not written to punish them.
Time to open a ‘Catch Up’ academy for Americans who are only now realizing they have little to no knowledge of politics…foreign or domestic. It’s a wake up call on an epic scale.
Laval, Petain, etc. However, me being a German thinks, they kinda didn't have the same 'vibe' like Quisling, Mussert, etc. Can highly recommend the series about N*zi Collaborators. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOOxUmeaRHE
The whole series I can recommend. I do however, and me being a German, don't agree on the Greek episode. Ioannis Rallis had no other option; to some extend.
Worst part is that it’s the same attitude that America had at the start of WWII that they do now. Anyone who can open a text book or even watch a documentary will know people tried to avoid war and tried America first back then.
See the difference between countries with great histories and respect for their cultures and their past, and the young country who initially got it right but forgot what their sage fathers advised them to do?
Pity the USA does not have a judiciary that serves the people instead of the political class. That is the only conclusion I can draw when a rapist, convicted felon, Jan 6 insurrectionist, six times bankrupt, misuser of charitable funds gets given a get out of jail card to run for president.
Ever since that gruesome beheading business after national protests thing back in 1793, French politicians have paid closer attention to the people's opinions on matters under their control.
HER DAD SAID THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS WAS A LIE
HER DAD WAS LIKE MUSK AND SHE IS LIKE A DAD
AND TRUMP MUSK HAVE THE NERVE TO SAY IN FRANCE COMMUNIST THIS ALL LIES

Today, Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis, who sentenced Marine Le Pen to four years in prison and five years of ineligibility, was placed under police protection because of threats received following her decision.
Democracy is fragile and precious.
She was guilty of embezzlement not minor crimes like treason, insurrection, espionage, rape, felony falsification of business records, multiple frauds, non payments, 30,573 lies while in office and thousands more out, incitement of hate and violence tearing the country apart… other than that…..
Trust me being a European this seems to be common practice by 'anti EU parties' , also they tend to hate the EU expect if they get benifits from it ... Even Victor Orban of Hungary is still part of the EU , and not the Russian Federation for one reason or another ... 🙄
There are legal precedent for stopping everything bad that is happening right now; but you have to have leaders strong enough to use them for them to work.
Honestly, I can't figure out why the Constitution has such a gaping loophole for the presidency. I guess the gentlemen farmers who wrote it never envisioned such an amoral person being taken in by the electorate.
Interesting that the right are once again calling this a politically motivated move; it's not like French judges are chosen by the President (unlike in some semi-demcroacies where justice and politics are not seperated).
For example: The US political system is corrupt at its core when it allows private corporations and large fortunes to finance election campaigns. This is an oligarchy. In Europe, it's an illegal practice because it's basically bribery. Money is given in exchange for favors.
In all seriousness, as a Canadian not intimately with the US laws, what can you do if your Commander in Cheetos simply ignores laws? An uprising? If he controls the media, the courts and the military then civil revolt is your only uprising or waiting for elections. No?

I also just saw an elderly couple on a midline news
Interview still touting the praises of Trump and musk. So don’t get it.
Share this FACT:
trump pardoned jan6th felons, he violated Federal Law that is clear, he cannot hold office...

It doesn't seem too long ago we were fearing her getting in!
Corruption and sleaze
Imagine how different life would be if that had happened in the US?
The entire system is corrupt.
How do you think Trump came to power?
I'm quite confident even Merrick Garland would have convicted Trump in 5 more years.

Fart rage has 2.5 days a week not working as an MP. So shouldn't he lose half his pay?
Labour probably have a few creeping in the background about now.
It is annoying that the Covid enquiry hasn't added jail time. It is pointless. "we know they are all dodgy and wasted billions but sorry."

Maybe their experience with greedy, power-hungry monarchs taught them well. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2025/03/27/nicolas-sarkozy-s-trial-prosecutors-request-7-year-prison-sentence-for-the-former-president_6739578_7.html
The hypocrisy is making Beelzebub blush.
Like here, she has an appeal to try next. Let's see if she actually does prison time.
