1/ After making Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, our team struggled with a follow-up. We eventually decided not to force it, moving on to other things. For me, I stepped away from game development and focused elsewhere, like parenting and moving house. But still I dabbled with solo projects...

2/ Dabbling only gets you so far though. Concepts and half-started projects piled up over time as I lost momentum and abandoned ideas. Meanwhile, the quality of indie games has skyrocketed enormously compared to a decade ago. Enter the self-doubt: can I even do this anymore?

3/ In the past, my advice to aspiring game developers often included “Do a game jam! In 48hrs you’ll have released a finished game and you can ditch your self-imposed ‘aspiring’ label”.

4/ Over time, my goal shifted from “make my next game” to just “make A game”. Scope down, simplify, be content with less-than-perfection. Sounds a lot like I should do a game jam, eh?

5/ So I did! Or rather, I looked for one to do on https://itch.io/jams. There are so many! There are even some directed exclusively at new developers, to help them feel more comfortable participating (which unexpectedly brought about a brief tables-have-turned moment of feeling unwelcome to participate).

6/ But with so many to choose from, I picked one that fit my schedule. That jam was… not this game jam.
