My wife struggled with “irritable bowel syndrome” for years with no solution. One day she got tired of seasonal allergies and went to an allergist. Allergy testing came back with something she didn’t expect, an allergy to soy. She cut soy out of her diet and IBS was resolved. Get allergy testing.
I had what I thought was IBS, and it turned out I'd developed an intolerance to black tea. A few years later the symptoms returned, and this time I'd become intolerant to wheat. Amazing the difference individual food items can make to your health!
I kept thinking I was being served bad fish in restaurants- turns out I had an intolerance to all finned fish. So no fish, wheat, rye or barley for me!
I decided to cut out gluten in November 2017 and it started 7 years of digestive HELL for me. I developed an unknown digestive disorder, as well as an eating disorder. Literally 6 days ago I said FUCK THIS and I went to the store and bought a loaf of bread. I was absolutely TERRIFIED to eat it.
I toasted a half a slice, put some butter on it and prayed! I ate it and NOTHING HAPPENED!! I’ve been eating like a normal person the last few days and my stomach hasn’t felt this good in years!! This is obviously the short version of my story. I’m going to eat CAKE tomorrow for my birthday! 🥰
I hope for your OK but remember that gluten intolerance is an inflammation buildup over time and it can take a while for pain to return. This is why many don’t think they have a problem. They don’t give it long enough. For me it’s dairy.
My sweet daughter suffered immensely from when she was 14 to 24. It was not u til we got a referral to go to Mayo Clinic in MN and we found she had been misdiagnosed and the medicines she was one were never going to help her. Excellent comprehensive 3 day packed tests discussions. Once she got the
Diagnosis she was put on a new drug at the time HUMIRA. What a difference. One year she was in the hospital 7 times. Lucky I worked for Kodak so the health insurance was good. Thank goodness. Hubby worked cap hill Excellent insurance. What a scary nerve wracking time.
IBS for 30 years. When it’s bad I gain 30 pounds of swelling in a week. Swell gets so bad it pushes my diaphragm so I can’t breath. Then pass out. Scares the heck out of people.
Thanks for posting this. I live with one of these disorders (IBS) and coping with it is a struggle, even on a low FODMAP diet. I hope there are continued efforts to help people with functional GI disorders get relief.
I'm nearly 20 years post-op for a bowel reconstruction and reanastomosis, and I'm beginning to realize there simply isn't a lot of data for the long-term effects from major abdominal surgery.
> For IBS, the low-FODMAP diet, which reduces fermentable sugars, works for many. For FD, a Low-Fat Diet, limiting spicy and acidic foods, avoiding caffeine and carbonated beverages, eating slowly, and chewing thoroughly usually helps reduce symptoms.
This is helpful, Mark. I've had something going on my entire life that's never been diagnosed. It's obvious to me that something isn't right. I'm still not completely on board with you, but you are starting to prove me wrong.
Far too many of our health issues are directly from what we put in our bodies. What we put in our bodies has been so heavily propagandized for decades and now even what is recommended in the so-called food pyramid is horrible for us. Chronic disease and cancer causing too.
Low Fodmap, while testing identifies which FODMAPS you are reactive to, also can not be maintained long term. This is a low fiber diet. Low fiber long term breaks down your gut barrier and has you deteriorate in May other additional ways

I'm glad this article mentions the importance of testing for underlying conditions. Getting the right testing often requires seeing a gi dr and/ or allergist. It took more than a decade to have my gastroparesis dx'd - but only two visits to a gi specialist. I should have been referred long before.
Thanks for that! Hopefully it will help me. I know my IBS flares when I'm very stressed for a long period of time. I need to learn to manage my stress.
Hidden GI disorders? One of the world’s best GI specialists was fellow beneath my mother’s wing. Glyphosate. Explodes crop threatening insects’ GI systems. Wheat. Corn. Soy. What do you suppose happens to human GI when enough ☠️ ingested? Organic. NonGMO. Imported 💰 pasta! NonGMO corn, etc etc etc
I would suggest reading Sally Norton's book Toxic Super Foods. All my GI and skin issues went away when I eliminated oxalates from my body. The oxalate dumping took about two years, but I am off my meds, and my GI issues are gone.
Mark, you don't know the half of it. I have an extremely rare genetic condition that has ruined my GI tract so much, my large intestines *will* eventually fail w/o future biotech assist
Yet, on the outside, you wouldn't know. I look as normal as any other 30-something male.
I've known about my food intolerance to paprika for about 12 years now. It took me about 10 years to figure it out. There's no test for it and gastroenterologists are constantly wanting to misdiagnose me with IBS.
In past couple of years, usage of paprika for color instead of red dyes has increased exponentially. I bet there are many other people with this intolerance who simply don't know. Food labels often say "spices" and it shouldn't be allowed!
Reminds me of the time in my highschool anatomy class I realized slowly but surely that celiac’s disease was an immunocompromised food allergy gone horribly wrong… thanks for the cool read!
Can we NOT use the awful word “impactful” when talking about GI disorders?????? A former nurse speaking here.(My God, that’s an awful word PERIOD! And don’t complain to me about the English language evolving and changing over time . It’s the worst adverb ever.)
“The pathogenesis remains unclear,”
It’s all of the additives in the food, the microplastics in our bodies, the poor air quality, the questionable water systems……. Plus, possibly, some heritability factors for some.
I definitely have gi issues. A few years ago I thought I was having a heart attack and went to the er. They said it was GERD. I was embarrassed. The inflammation has been so bad for years. I have been on semiglutide for about 6 months and my inflammation has gone so much.
I cut out gluten when I read an article that listed 8 or so symptoms and I had them all. The difference isn’t small. I feel so much better now and I sleep better than I have in an age.
And if you’re a woman, press them to test for endometriosis. My doctors in the US diagnosed me with IBS. Had surgery here in Portugal to remove giant ovarian cysts and turned out I have stage 4 endometriosis. So women, ask for a 2nd opinion. Better yet go to another country where doctors care.
Limiting sugary foods and cutting out processed and fast foods from your diet will do wonders. Start reading labels. If you don't know what an ingredient is, don't eat it.

So you're saying I should change *everything*
Is
The GOP / MAGA / Trump policies will continue to balloon the deficit - as an excuse to cut anything that helps working g people
The record for the last 30 years is that they only pretend to care about deficits
- basically a carnivore most of his life, now feeling better than ever after 3 months. Significant and easy weight loss while gaining muscle too.
Functional Medicine has been the most beneficial avenue for patients with IBS/SIBO/IMO and or Hydrogen Sulfide.
