When I was a kid they would threaten to do this like "if you don't raise your hand and admit it right now, the whole class is staying in for recess" and I falsely confessed every time so I could stay inside alone and let the rest of my class free. Everyone knew I was an angel including the teacher.

Makes me wonder though if anyone’s ever done studies on effective counters to that. I feel like there must be a ton of sociologists somewhere desperate for people to interview them and not knowing how to initiate it in grassroots enough ways.

One effective counter I discovered as a goody goody kid is falsely confessing and sacrificing myself to let the class off when everyone knew for a fact I would never willingly misbehave.

I think there’s a critical point there although I dunno that sacrificing at this particular point in history has the same…magnitude of consequences. I think the critical part of me doing it as a kid was that everyone unequivocally knew I was not guilty, and I was putting my teacher in position to either call me a liar & teach a bunch of 3rd graders about false confession or treat my confession as true.They always chose to believe the confession.

So it wouldn't really work now, since I'm no longer the spotless straight A student who doesn't even know a single curse word. I didn't understand it at the time but the key to this self sacrifice was that in the eyes of the teacher and the other kids, I was perfect aside from this one lie.
