You couldn't make The Ring today because there was something inherently buyable about a VHS tape being cursed, whereas these days that film would have to be about a haunted YouTube video or a haunted Blu-ray disc and it just doesn't work as well.

Yes! Systems like tape, film, cassettes play better than digital (so far). Their imperfections give them character (warbles, tracking lines, etc), and their analog nature makes us buy something being *impressed* upon them. (I think this is why microfiche > search engines.)
Exactly, the lack of clarity in the quality added kind of a mystique to it. It's the same reason why I think "Faces of Death" type snuff films simply don't exist anymore; the quality has gotten so good now that it's almost impossible to fake stuff like that anymore.
Hell, even a cult classic like Session 9 might be hard to rewrite nowadays. I can't put my finger on it, but I just feel like something since the ubiquitous miniaturizing portability of technology has put people off suspension of disbelief but not completely into logical skepticism.
