The United States is not considering returning to Ukraine the nuclear weapons the country previously agreed to give up under the Budapest Memorandum, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in an interview on Dec. 1.

We (The US) couldn’t return those nukes to Ukraine if we wanted to. I thought those went to Russia as part of the Budapest Accord? And I doubt we’d give them new Nukes. I mean, they aren’t Isreal or anything…
How about just keeping up "your" end of the deal instead.
Pretty poor to lure someone to give up their weapon with promises that "you" will defend them, but when they are attacked, then "you" just leave them defenceless.
There was some promise…
(If the signatories are threatened or invaded and) Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".
Which we did. However, as everybody knew at the time any country that could threaten Ukraine with nuclear weapons was had veto power over Security Council decisions. It was a meaningless clause.
It's doubly meaningless because Memorandums aren't treaties and nobody's obligated to follow them anyway
The memorandum has unfortunate ambiguous wording. Assistance is being provided, just not the assistance we here want to see happen. Russia is the only signatory that has violated the agreement.
We should defend them promise or not! I stand with Ukraine!!! The US should be much more involved. Unfortunately, the asshat clown show was elected and the next administration is nothing more than Putin sympathizer's. Ukraine should start a collection fund, I know I would donate to their cause!
Lol the US has given 0 jets, 0 long range missiles, and a handful of short range ATACMS they weren't allowed to use for 3 years. The US is never going to give Ukr what it needs to win.
If two parties make a deal and one of those two parties reneges on the agreed upon deal, shouldn’t the affected party be made whole and have it f@€king missiles returned??🤔
Who would trust them now it has been proven that they will not honor the agreement they forced Ukraine to sign and they will not give Ukraine back, what they gave up for that guarantee, the US is now unwilling to honor.
A New York Times article had suggested Joe Biden could do so. 😉
Meanwhile, the world’s 100 biggest defence equipment makers increased their arms sales by 4.2% in 2023 to US$632bn, fuelled by wars and regional tensions, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) said on Monday.
Ha, yes. Supporters of freedom and democracy have failed to communicate effectively with violent authoritarians in recent times, but I feel like this in an underexplored avenue by which we could establish a new understanding.
Correct. Authoritarians and criminals bent on violating rules and norms don't respond to shame or admonishment as a corrective. Other methods are needed.
Those weapons no longer exist, What a silly answer. But also a weak answer, this fool will never understand the value of not telling russia everything you won't do.
And with that statement, with that attitude, mo security guarantee except full Nato membership will suffice. You just voided all trust in security guarantees. What country will sign such a memorandum in the future? None. Because you just declared them worthless.
Ukraine knew memorandums were non-binding when they signed it, that's why they aren't throwing a tantrum over it. And, for the record, the US followed all parts of it anyway. We went above and beyond the agreement. We still are.
Right, they asked us to follow it and bring it up to the UN security council, as stipulated in point four. Which we did. We did it again in '22. That's the entire extent of what the memorandum said we'd do. It never guaranteed anybody would come to their aid, though we did anyway.
Betrays what trust? Ukraine knew it wasn't a binding agreement and knew even it were a binding agreement that it wasn't a guarantee of their territorial independence. The only stipulation put in there is if someone threatened Ukraine that we'd bring it up with the UN. Which we did.
It's the best way out of the Ukraine situation, but CRITICALLY: **IF** the weapons (or equivalent capability) were going to be returned, this MUST not be announced in advance of them being operational.
I'm not so sure there, because if he's a Russian agent, he's actually done a really good job. But unless Biden is too, he really is a self-defeating and indeed, defeated moron without any legacy whatsoever. He had opportunity to defend democrats and democracy and did neither.
If it is not returned for treason for not fulfilling the condition, this will give Ukraine the legitimacy of the right to produce nuclear warheads for its survival. The USA did not honor its commitment to Ukraine and will not honor it with anyone else, IS FALSE.

and he's gone soon
history is forever going to hate Jake the Snake
What a tool.
If you follow the memorandum to the dot like a lawyer you might be right but simultaneously you, as I said, void ANY chance for further agreements.

Our word is nothing, nukes are necessary for security.
Got it. That was your intent, yes?
