This kind of behavior will isolate the US on the world stage. You can’t threaten to invade your allies and think that it won’t have diplomatic consequences.

Btw if Greenland wants independence that is 100% their right. But I would expect that such an independence process would include becoming a part of various defense alliances, and I’d be very surprised that a nation that just gained independence would love a new colonial ruler.
But maybe Iceland has some pointers, I believe they’ve gotten the US to pay for all sorts of stuff in exchange for letting them have military bases there.
But allowing an ally to have a presence vs being invaded by «an ally» are dramatically different situations.
After thinking about it, I think now is probably the worst time for Greenland to go independent, because Trump has already said he might take it by force and NATO inclusion for new members has to be unanimous among existing members.
Also… just sayn’… the US has troops in Greenland right now.
Our main airport was built by the US military. The had their base there. The housing complex is still right there next to the airport. (the housing cluster to the bottom right)
Trump's actions are always consistent with that of a Russian asset. That's not particularly reassuring, but that's where we are at. Basically Russia won the war against the US by getting the #dumfuks here to vote for a Russian asset (again).
What's going to happen here is uncertain. Trump said shit like this his entire first time but he was surrounded by grownups who tampered down his more bat-shit crazy ideas. Now those people are gone and won't be returning.
Trump is surrounded by loyal sycophants who have made the decision to try to get him whatever he wants provided they can keep stuffing their pockets with money from the US treasury.
You *can* do that and think that it won't have diplomatic consequences. You'd (hopefully) be wrong, but you can certainly do it. We're watching it happen.
To be fair to him, there are hard right enthusiasts in other countries who want to give him a free pass on this sort of thing. And they're apparently gaining in popularity. So maybe he's onto something after all.
But what if you don't want allies who don't agree with you? We may call them the "sane" allies, but that's not the perspective of the people who are happy to lose them.

US allies aren’t. Heads of state all over NATO and the EU are steadfastly reiterating the same message: this is not ok and this is not normal.
World: this is the commander in chief of the most terrifying military force on the planet. He might be an edge lord, but now he has actual nukes.
