It is on the South American continent. But people aren't referred to as the continent they hail from unless you don't know the country. Nobody looks at someone from Argentina and goes "hey look a South(Latin) American!" Francis was from South America but Leo is the first American.

Geographically speaking, Argentina is part of the Americas (as Britannica defines it), so technically Francis was the first Pope from the Americas. Leo would be the first Pope from North America, but not the first American Pope

Francis the first Pope from The Americas yes, but he's Argentinian. Not American. Currently there's is only one country who's citizens are called Americans. Leo is the first American Pope, Francis was the first Argentinian Pope.
