I thought he was referring to the fact that they, as broadcasters, had been hired to do the job by Rupert.

I might not be remembering it correctly, the context led me to think he was referring to Rupert yoinking NFC broadcast rights from CBS years and years ago, which did a lot more for Fox TV than it ever did for the NFL.
